Our Vacation (Part Three)

Raymond Johns took a second drink from his bottle of beer.  He was a little man, balding and overweight.  He spoke with a ‘cartoonish’ accent that made me like him. He kept glancing at Eve’s crossed legs from across the patio.  She would intentionally move her skirt higher to make him more nervous … like catching a kid with his hand in his mother’s purse “borrowing” a few dollars.  I sent her one of my silent expressions that said “will you please stop that”, and she looked away trying to hide a smile.

“Mr. Johns,” I continued, “I am not sure I understand.  The things you have been telling us seem like a fantasy story from an old book.  We’re just people.”

The man smiled, “People?  Maybe you look like us, but you’re not like us.  I know there are eight of you running around living your lives from day to day in appearance, but you can do things and you’re old.” He pulled a small package from his pants pocket. “Look, I’ve found pictures and have looked through old books and found each of you ”

He handed me the documents bound by a rubber band in a tattered folder.  Several pictures slid out from the civil war era and small prints of portraits from the 17th century were behind them.  There were newspaper articles about miraculous healings and criminals turning themselves in while speaking gibberish, mimicking a  small child’s voice.

He took a big gulp of beer and said pointing to the papers, “It’s all there, pictures of you and her and the people you are with now and those 2 red-heads in Texas.  You’ve all been around for quite a long time.  I’ve documented everything, Mr. Ancient.”

“Joseph?” Eve moved closer to us. “Joseph, let me see.”

“Well Ray, looks like you’ve caught us?” Eve looked up from the documents at Joseph as he confessed. “Yes, we are a bit different, but not by much.  We are the same, just gifted.  It all started in my village a long time ago.  We were fisherman and we were peaceful people.  It was a very clean and calm place where I came from. I hate to do this . . . .”

“What are you going to do?” Raymond asked nervously. “I’m not gonna’ tell anyone, I just wanted to meet you all and ask questions and hear stories.”

“Now you have met us, Mr. Johns.  Let me shake your hand to congratulate you.  You are the best around today, to have found us when no one else is paying attention to us.  Now I will tell you everything.  Does anyone else know about our group? Have you told anyone?”

Raymond hesitantly extended his hand to be shaken, not sure if this man was going to hurt him.  Just the same he took his hand and replied, “No.  Who would take me seriously?  I did it as a hobby, but when I saw you had a website, I entered www.ancientscoin.com with such excitement.  I was able to buy and handle the things you and the others surely held and examined.  I would have a piece of you and a piece of history.  No. I only told my wife.  But she, in the meantime,  took off with her sister to Canada to live in a commune that makes soap.  That’s a whole ‘nother story. I’m alone.”

Eve felt sort of sorry that Joseph had to do what he has always done. She hoped that it wouldn’t hurt the man in any way. This guy seemed like a nice man, a lonely man. Raymond Johns began to feel confused and dizzy, but nothing was spinning.  Joseph’s touch was causing this.

“What’s happening”, he asked, starting to drool and slump in his seat.

“Joseph, he’s not a bad person, not like the others.  Be gentle --- kind with him, even though he is a dirty old man.” Eve pleaded on behalf of Raymond Johns.

Ray stared blankly at the ground, drool slipping from his lips.  Eve fixed his shirt collar as Joseph spoke.

“Raymond, I want you to forget all about the research you did and destroy the evidence. Get rid of this notebook and any other information you may have at home.  I want you to just remember that you visited a fun website called House of Ancient Coins and Curios and had a nice fantasy about some people that were different than everyone else.  You will just think of us as characters in a book that you have enjoyed.  Of course keep buying my stuff at www.ancentscoin.com , but just for keepsakes to fuel the fantasy.  In the meantime you will become obsessed with joining your wife in Canada.  You will see her in the same way that you see my wife Eve…beautiful and desirable.  You will be her hero.”

The only word that came from Ray’s mouth was “Okay”.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?  To have him hunt down his wife?  What if he winds up stalking her?” Eve interjected.

“Okay, Ray, listen.  You will be the most romantic man that she ever met and you will hang on her words like they were the most beautiful music.”

Once again, Ray just replied, “Okay.”

Eve smiled.  “So our body chemistry will always be this potent or toxic to others.”

“It’s the medicine,” I replied, “it will always be us and we will always be it.”

“At least he will be okay,” she said as they walked away from the patio to head back to the hotel, “he won’t be trying to rob a bank by pointing his finger and singing the words like you made that Mexican drug lord do.”

“Yeah … now that was fun.”  I said as we made our way arm in arm down the boardwalk.

Our Vacation (Part Two)

Before I go on with my story, I’d like to say that Jago, Chester and the others have been very argumentative regarding this blog and my website, “House of Ancient Coins & Curios”.  They say that we should not let anyone know about us because they wouldn’t understand and we would be taken to a secret army base and dissected and labeled.
My friends, if you are reading this today, let me tell you shouldn’t worry about these things (Jago!!).   We have been hiding far too long from the world.  Okay, so we have been stoned, burned at the stake, hung by the neck,  beheaded, buried alive and so on.  Sure it hurts and it is inconvenient, but nothing has kept us from living our lives.  My website , www.ancientscoin.com  is not hurting you or me or any of us.  You’ve always trusted me, so trust keep trusting …even now.

Anyway, back to the story --- in the diner, this man was hiding the fact that he was watching us. Eve and I saw through this quickly.  She made a suggestion, “Since we’re finished, let’s pay up and leave to see if he follows us.”

I agreed and we left the diner to walk along the shore.  Our watcher was good because it took a half hour before we saw him again. He stood alone,  appearing to look innocent while paging through a magazine at a nearby stand as he followed us.

I smiled after spotting him and asked Eve, “Shall we head back … but pick up our pace?”  She agreed.  I knew walking faster would catch us up to our spy. “What shall we do when we catch up to him?” she asked.

“Buy him a drink.” I said as my smile widened.

I did like playing these “games” --- we began to refer to these confrontations as “games” after so many years of trying to hide in the open. There have been many “spies” who thought they have discovered us and they want to tell the world about the wonder they have found, but thanks to the differences the “medicine” has made in us, we have a wonderful defense.

Eve ran ahead to slow down our prey.  She could move quickly in her heels and short skirt … so graceful and sleek … our spy would not be able to resist.  Our new friend was watching me and didn’t see Eve approach from behind.  I stopped to look at the ocean as she pounced, stunning him with her beauty and corning him with personality.

“Hello”, she greeted with a disarming smile, “you’ve been following us”.

The man stammered.  He didn’t expect to see her or speak to her, let alone gaze into such beautiful eyes.  “I … I ummm …. “  He didn’t know what to say.  He was an inch shorter than Eve and somewhere in his late fifties.  He seemed mature enough, but inexperienced at intrigue.  “Look, I just wanted to ask a couple of questions.”
He didn’t see me behind him.  He was shaken when I spoke, “You were watching us at the diner and now following us.  How do you know us?”

He pulled something from his pocket.  It was one of my House of Ancient Coins and Curios business cards.  Eve and I laughed as the man looked at us with a concerned frown.

“What is it you want?” I asked.

“My name Raymond Johns and I have been reading your Blog and visiting your website for the past six months.  I just wanted to ask you some questions is all. I am a fan.  I even bought some stuff from your website.”

“Well thank you Raymond”, I said, “but we are on vacation and would like to relax without ‘fans’ interrupting our privacy”.

He squirmed a bit and said, “But I know who you are, and her, and your friends.”

“Oh and who are we?” I challenged.

“You’re not like us, not human.”

I looked at Eve and she scrunched her brow, questioning what I wanted to do next.
I held my hand out to the man - to shake it hello and I said, “Well Mr. Raymond Johns, you must many questions.  How about a drink?”  I asked smiling down at him.

Eve shook her head and rolled her eyes thinking, “Here we go again”.

Our Vacation

Eve and I had a wonderful time on our vacation until today.  The peaceful sound of the ocean waves and seagulls in the morning, reminded me of our home so long ago.

“Want to have lunch at Shore Scene’s diner after our swim today?” Eve asked as she slipped on a bikini top.

“Sure.  I love their grilled lobster and salmon.  Remember our days in Morocco, eggs and lobster for breakfast?  Of course that’s all the fishing village had for breakfast, lunch and dinner.” I said with a snicker.

“Amazing how fast time goes by.  We will never have that again . . . gone forever”. She said sadly as she walked to me, took my arms and wrapped them around her. “But we will always be . . .” Eve gave me a kiss and we readied ourselves for the beach.

The swim and morning sun were refreshing.  We finished, went back to our room, changed, and went to the Shore Scene’s diner that overlooked the ocean’s shore line.
I always leave business cards where ever we go. These have House of Ancient Coins and Curios printed boldly with our web address showing.  I tossed one onto an unoccupied dining table as we walked by and I left several in the men’s restroom.

During our lunch I noticed someone watching us from behind a menu about 4 tables away. I’ve been around for a long time, so you have a tendency of picking up on those kinds of things, even in a crowded restaurant.  I spoke to Eve as I gouged a piece of lobster with my fork. Without looking up to arouse his suspicion I said, “Do you see that guy over close to the kitchen door?”

“Way before you did”, Eve said while taking a drink.  “He’s sort of sloppy doing surveillance.  Do you think he is one of them?” she asked.

“Don’t know”, let’s just relax and see what happens.  Damn!  All I wanted to do was relax for one week to forget about everything else.”

Eve smiled, “This could be fun…. You don’t have to always live in www.ancientscoin.com .  This could be someone to play with.”

I looked at her. “I don’t feel like playing today.”

Jago’s Secret

Jago, Mona, Chester and Dani got together one weekend when Joseph and Eve were vacationing out of town.  Saturday was very warm and staying indoors with the air conditioning on was the best thing to do until nightfall.  Mona and Dani were trying on clothes while Chester and Jago played a game of poker on Chester’s dining room table.
Each man emptied his pockets to throw change onto his side of the table for money to gamble with.

“Okay, what are we playing?” Jago asked.

Chester thought for a moment, “5 card stud, deuces wild, 2 bits to open.”

“Sounds good”, Jago said nodding to one side.  “You deal”.

In Dani and Chester’s bedroom, Mona flipped her long chestnut brown hair to one side and pouted with her full lips. “This still makes me look like I have a gut.” She said pointing at the mirror toward the top she was trying on.

“You always say that,” Dani rebuked giving Mona one of her famous crooked smiles.  Chester loved her smile, the way her face lit up like fireworks whether she was happy or sad.  She ran her fingers through her blond hair, pushing it out of her eyes as she rummaged through the tops on the bed, looking for another that Mona could try on. “Here, you are the only person I know that can make gray look beautiful.  It matches our eyes”.

Mona replaced tops and stood looking in the mirror.  “Well”, she said, “I like it.  You always know what suits me, old girl.”

“Old girl?!” Dani looked insulted.  “See if I drag out all of my clothes to play dress up with you ever again!”

“Just kidding!”

“Hello --- I know!” Dani said as her face lit up. “You look beautiful.  Lucky Jago!”

“What?” Jago asked from the dining room after hearing his name.

“Can you hear them in there?” Chester asked.

“Sure I can.  I may be really old, but I can still dance.” He said jokingly with a dramatic expression on his face.

The girls came into the room. “Did you say we were going dancing?”  Mona asked as she interrupted the game by sitting on Jago’s lap.

“No. Sorry my love.  I was just making a point to my man Chester here.  Besides, I am going to clean Mr. Money Bags of all his cash this evening.  Maybe we will go out later.” Jago said as he lifted his wife off of his lap and swatted her aside by lightly slapping her rear.

The girls giggled sarcastically as they left the room. Chester motioned to continue. “Now, where were we?” he asked.

“I am raising you 50 cents and calling your hand.”  Just as Jago finished tossing his change into the pot, a coin caught Chester’s eye.  “What is that?” he asked pointing to a coin.

Jago gave a grimace.  He was caught.  He couldn’t believe he was so careless at keeping his own secret. “What is that?” Chester prodded.

Jago picked up the coin. “It’s a city commemorative coin for Constantine the first.  That’s Roma with a helmet looking left.  And on the rear of the coin Romulus and Remus are being suckled by the she-wolf.  It’s cast in silver and is very fine.”

Chester laughed very hard at what Jago just showed him.  “You were giving Joseph such a hard time about his coins and look at you. Did you get this at…what does he call it….House of Ancient Coins and Curios?”

“Shut up”, Jago returned, “okay … so I went to www.ancientscoin.com to see what all the fuss was about and I bought this.  It reminded me of the day I met Joseph.  He is right, these do help us remember things we have forgotten.”

“Like magic?” Chester asked.

“I don’t know….all I do know is that when I hold it and look at it, I feel so close to that time. Please don’t tell Joseph.  He will never let me live it down.”

The girls came back in room. “What was all the laughing about?” Dani inquired walking towards Chester.

Jago gave a stern gesture to Chester not to say anything.  He thought for a second and said, “Jago was telling me how going dancing tonight would be a great time for all of us.”

Jago squeezed his eyes shut and looked down.  Looking back up he feigned a smile and said…that’s right…tonight we dance!”

Jago tightened his hand around the silver round secret in his fist.  “Hope Joseph is kind when Chester tells him about the coin.” He thought to himself.

I Am the Oldest

A cool breeze relieved the heat from my bald scalp as I dug into the ground with the shovel.  Working the garden with my wife Eve made me forget the confines of the house we now called our home.  I hated staying inside all the time with the television or stereo blaring for entertainment to pass the time …. time?  So much time! Too much time perhaps . . . .

“Don’t start drifting off when there is work to be done.” Eve commanded as she knelt a few feet away planting flowers. “What were you thinking?” she asked, taking a break from her work.

“Nothing in particular,” I replied with a slight smile.  Lately my friends have been telling me that I have been drifting off into thought in the middle of sentences. “I just was thinking about time . . . .”

“What about it?  Aren’t you happy with our life?”

I looked at her.  She is so beautiful.  The face that launched a thousand ships cursed to walk with me through life and so much time.  I have a coin that shows Cleopatra in my collection that I haven’t put on the House of Ancient Coins and Curios web-site yet, that shows a hint of Cleopatra’s beauty, but nothing compares to Eve.  Maybe if I put her picture on http://www.ancientscoin.com/ more people would pass through just to have a look.

“I am happier than I have ever been, but there are times when I miss the old days.  We had good times back home and in Rome.  This age is curious with everyone going nowhere fast --- this era is fast paced, but where were from was slow and thoughtful – where a day seemed like twenty-four hours, not 24 minutes.   I miss it sometimes.”

Eve stood and gave me a big hug and kiss.  “See what your alchemy has brought?  It brought ten of us here … this far, for this long.  I love you even though you are the oldest of us.”

“And the prettiest,” I said jokingly as I lifted her up and hugged her tighter.

“I really am the oldest”, I thought sadly to myself.

Eve slid down from my grasp and set her green eyes into mine. “Joseph, it’s all been good”, she said, “I love the gift you gave to us – we will always see what happens tomorrow.”

I pushed aside her thick auburn hair and pulled her into my gaze.  For a moment I stood silent as she anticipated my next sentence. “I think you need to plant some orange ones over there.” I said with a little humor to change the subject.

“Orange flowers?  With blue and violet? After all these years you still have no taste.”
“I guess I am getting older “. I joked.

“No, you’re getting dumber”. She laughed as she pushed my chest with her hands to move me aside. She knelt and returned to work as she laughed.
